A tune you nailed last month can slip away by next session if it doesn't get real, structured practice. The Cairn is a practice companion built around exactly that problem: helping you learn tunes once and actually hold onto them.

Practice that remembers what you don't
Every tune you're working on gets a status — from Just Learning through Getting There, Session Ready, all the way to Solo Ready. After each practice session, you rate how it went, and The Cairn uses that to schedule what to review next: tunes you know well come back less often, and tunes that are still shaky come back sooner. No spreadsheets, no sticky notes on a tune book — just a clear answer to "what should I practice today?"
Sheet music that plays itself
Tunes are stored as ABC notation and rendered into real playable sheet music right in the browser — no separate notation software, no PDFs to manage. Every tune comes with:
- Playback at an adjustable tempo, so you can hear a tune before you can play it up to speed.
- A metronome and drone, with your tempo history tracked over time so you can see yourself speeding up.
- Live transpose, shifting a tune into a different key on the fly — Now you can bump that D minor tune setting to E minor to better suite your instrument and still be able to play along (on your C Whistle) with those people who aren't playing on a diatonic instrument.
- A built-in chromatic tuner, tuned (pun intended) to hold up on the messy, harmonic-rich tone of instruments like flute and whistle.
Organized your way
Group the tunes you're working on into TuneBoxes — one per instrument, if you play more than one — and within a box, build Practice Lists for a specific goal: building repertoire toward a session, or woodshedding one stubborn tune until it sticks. Combine tunes into sets the way they're actually played together, and step through a set one tune at a time in a focused practice session.
Learning with a teacher
If you're working with a teacher, The Cairn supports a real teacher/student roster: a teacher can share tunes and settings with just their students, and see their progress. Don't have a teacher on The Cairn yet? You can still send anyone a private link to a single tune to look at — no account required on their end.
About signing in with Google
The only way to create an account is "Sign in with Google," which we know is asking for a little trust up front — so here's exactly what that does and doesn't mean. Google is used only to confirm who you are (your name and email) so your practice progress is tied to your account and nobody else's. The Cairn never posts anything, sends anything, or reads anything from your Google account beyond that — no email access, no contacts, no calendar, nothing. We don't sell or share your information with anyone, and there's no advertising here to sell it to. It's a small, independently-run practice tool, not a platform trying to monetize your data.
